Hi! My Name is Cosmos Parris
I am a people person and I live on the north coast of Jamaica. I am a born and bred Jamaican although I lived away from Jamaica for over 30 years. I am from a family of 10 paired 5 girls and 5 boys. Sadly, I lost a sister some years ago.
I have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. I walked away from a marriage that was broken and returned to the land of my birth.
I love gardening although I don’t do as much now as I would love to.
My background started with being secretary to the managing directors of 2 different companies. From an early age I was interested in helping others and taught literacy classes to the mature and the young in remote areas of Kingston as well as my workplace where I saw the need, to help laborers from the field in reading and writing. I discovered that people just wanted to be heard and to learn. I am a good listener.
Fast forward to living in Guyana for 33 years where I got involved in helping at the high school in the bauxite community, teaching needlework and dress, and guidance counselling. I found that students were hungry for knowledge in personal development and most importantly finding a listening ear.
While living in Guyana I taught myself the art of manufacturing ceramics and made a small business out of it. I also started a small business that bartered rice for industrial chemicals between Guyana and Jamaica, and for a short while represented Caribbean Cable company in selling their electrical cables in the country
Yet later I was drafted into working on a research team in HIV Aides project funded by an International Organization, around Guyana and in a few schools, an experience which opened my eyes to the plight of the voiceless. I also worked as a Consultant as part of a team of 3 with the Community Based Rehabilitation Program, covering Region 3 on the West Bank of the Demerara river monitoring how the physically challenged fitted into the normal school system. I chose 12 of the children and wrote their stories. I later understood that the document was used as the background for ongoing programs.
